CASE STUDY:

Climate Resiliency Capacity Building Program

In response to the growing threats of climate change affecting their environment, community well-being, and land integrity, H3M partnered with the Métis Settlement to gather feedback and identify key concerns and solutions from the community’s perspective. The community has shown leadership by emphasizing the importance of both mitigation and adaptation strategies. One major initiative highlighted in the proposal was the hiring and training of a local Indigenous Guardian. This role was designed to build capacity within the community, merging Traditional Land Use and Knowledge with environmental stewardship, and equipping the Guardian to support future climate resilience projects.

H3M incorporated both global climate trends and local events—such as wildfires and floods—into its analysis to create a Climate Resiliency Action Plan. Workshops with community members revealed deep concerns, including increased natural disasters, loss of traditional species, and challenges in maintaining basic needs like heating, cooling, and water access. Informed by these insights, H3M developed a range of suggested actions, including household-level prevention and mitigation strategies, emergency response planning, and educational programs. These initiatives aim to strengthen the Settlement’s ability to withstand and adapt to ongoing and future climate-related threats.
